What actually goes wrong with a C8 Corvette?
Across four C8 Corvettes — a Stingray, two Z06s and a ZR1 — I’ve had three problems total, and only one was the car’s fault. The C8’s genuine weak points are early-2020 valve springs, 2021–2022 rear half shafts, and a 2023–2026 Z06/ZR1 fuel-filler recall. Nearly everything else is owner-induced or overstated online.
My ownership record
Search “C8 Corvette problems” and you get a wall of Reddit threads and forum panic. Fair enough — that’s where owners go when something goes wrong, so that’s where the failures pile up. What you don’t get is anyone counting the cars that didn’t break.
I’ve owned four C8s: a Stingray, two Z06s, and the ZR1 I’m driving now. That’s [TJ: insert total combined mileage] miles across four cars and [TJ: insert number of model years, e.g. “five model years”] of the platform. Three things went wrong. Two of them were my doing. Here’s every one of them, and then the honest year-by-year record for the whole platform, with the actual GM recall numbers so you can check your own VIN instead of trusting a forum post.
The three things that went wrong on my C8s
1. The ZR1 overfilled at the pump — and it’s an open recall
The one incident that was genuinely the car. Filling the ZR1, fuel came back up out of the filler pocket instead of shutting off cleanly. [TJ: insert what you saw — did it pool in the pocket, run down the quarter, was there a smell, did you notice a code or anything on the DIC?]
I took it to the dealer. They inspected it and told me the car was fine — nothing broken, nothing leaking, no fault stored. Which was true. But it’s also not the whole story, and this is the part nobody online is connecting.
GM has an open safety recall for exactly this condition. Recall N252514930 (NHTSA campaign 25V536) covers 2023–2026 Corvette Z06 models with the LT6 and 2025–2026 Corvette ZR1 models with the LT7 — every car equipped with the left-side radiator and fan combination.
The problem: excess fuel spilled into the filler pocket during refueling can run down onto that left-side radiator/fan assembly and reach an ignition source. The fix is a filler neck seal panel — part 86371991 — that shields the pocket and diverts spillage away. Free, at any Chevy dealer. Owner letters went out November 14, 2025, and roughly 23,656 cars are covered.

GM’s position is that this is rare and that badly behaving pump nozzles are a contributing factor, and their advice is worth following regardless of what you drive: make sure the nozzle is fully seated in the filler pipe, shut the engine off while fueling, and never keep going after the pump clicks off the first time. That last one is the whole ballgame. The C8’s filler geometry does not want to be topped off.

If your dealer tells you the car is fine after a fuel spill, they’re probably right about the car — and still may not have looked up the campaign. Ask for it by number. “Nothing’s wrong” and “there’s an open recall” are both true here.
2. Lowering the Z06 killed the front lift
This one was me. I lowered one of my two Z06s [TJ: insert which setup — springs, coilovers, or just a strut-perch adjustment, and how much drop] and the front lift stopped working.
Nothing broke. The lift system on the C8 works within a defined ride-height window, and once you pull the nose down far enough, the geometry no longer lets the system do its job — it either won’t cycle, throws a message, or lifts to a height that no longer clears anything useful. The car doesn’t know you changed the suspension. It just knows the numbers stopped making sense.
This is the single most common self-inflicted C8 “failure” I see people post about, and it always shows up framed as a defect. It isn’t. If you lower a C8 and you care about front lift, that has to be part of the plan before you order parts, not a surprise afterward. 3. The Stingray broke a rear axle launching
Also me. Launching the Stingray hard [TJ: insert roughly how many launches, surface, tire, and whether it was a dig or a roll] snapped a rear half shaft. Car went nowhere. No warning, no noise beforehand — just torque going in and nothing coming out.
The C8’s rear half shafts are the weak link in the driveline the moment you add sticky tires and repeated hard launches. The DCT delivers torque faster and more consistently than any human with a clutch pedal, which is exactly what makes the car so quick and exactly what eats shafts. This is well known in the drag community and almost invisible to people shopping for a daily driver. I broke down the axle failure in detail here, including what I replaced it with.
Don’t confuse my broken shaft with the recall. GM did recall a small batch of 2021–2022 Stingrays for half shafts missing ball bearings from the factory (N212351320 / NHTSA 22V091000) — that’s a manufacturing defect on a handful of cars. Mine broke because I launched it. Different problem, same part. Check your VIN either way.

The recalls that actually matter
- Fuel-filler pocket spillage — N252514930 / 25V536. 2023–2026 Z06 (LT6) and 2025–2026 ZR1 (LT7) with the left-side radiator/fan. Dealer installs shield 86371991. Roughly 23,656 cars. This is the current one, and it’s the one that hit my ZR1.
- Seat belt retractors — N242441390 / 391 / 392. Driver and/or passenger retractor can lock in the stowed position and become unusable. Originally 2024–2025, later expanded back through 2020. Retractor replacement, free.
- Rear half shafts — N212351320 / 22V091000. A small batch of 2021–2022 Stingrays got shafts missing one or more ball bearings, which can cause a loss of drive power. Dealers replace the affected side or sides.
- Hood may open at speed — N202311160 / 20V-489. 2020 only. Body control module software update limits the car to 26 mph when the hood isn’t latched, plus a change to how the key fob release behaves. Can go over the air.
- Interior frunk release — 2020, FMVSS 401 compliance. After ten minutes of sleep mode the inside release stopped waking the module. Software fix.
- Rear turn signal detection — N252541250. 2025–2026. Software error meant a burned-out rear turn signal might not be reported to the driver. Dealer or over-the-air update; letters went out May 18, 2026.
Look at that list again. Four of the six are software or a bracket. One is a seat belt retractor. Exactly one is a driveline part, on a tiny batch of cars. For a mid-engine supercar built in volume, that’s a short list.
The 2020 valve spring thing, explained properly
This is the single most-repeated C8 horror story and it’s constantly told wrong. Here’s what actually happened.
GM issued TSB PIP5752A in September 2020 covering a bad batch of valve springs from a supplier. It was never a Corvette-only problem — the same springs went into the L87, LT1, LT4, L82, L84 and L8T, which means Camaros, Silverados, Tahoes, Sierras and Express vans were all in scope alongside the LT2. Symptoms are a check engine light, a misfire, and odd noises, typically with P0300, P0106 or P0506 stored.
The original build window was engines built June 1 through September 15, 2020 — and note that’s the engine build date at Tonawanda, not the car’s build date at Bowling Green, which follows weeks later. GM later extended that window as more owners outside it reported failures. Inside the window and with no cylinder leakage found, the fix was replacing every spring on both banks. Outside it, dealers replaced only the broken one. GM followed with Service Update N202319660 in November 2020, which applied to dealer inventory cars.
What that means for you: this is a narrow 2020 issue tied to a supplier batch, not a design flaw in the LT2, and it’s now six years in the rearview. If you’re buying a 2020 Stingray, ask for engine build date and service history. That’s it.

On the transmission specifically: the dual-clutch feeling hesitant or clunky when cold is how a DCT behaves, not a fault. If it’s genuinely shifting badly, the first two things to look at are fluid condition and control module software — and the fluid is a job you can do yourself. Which C8 years I’d buy, and which I’d think about
2022 is the sweet spot on a used Stingray. The launch-year software campaigns are long done, the half-shaft batch is identified and fixed, and depreciation has done its work. 2020 isn’t a car to avoid — it’s a car to buy with paperwork. Get the engine build date, confirm both frunk campaigns are closed, and confirm valve spring service if the engine falls in that summer 2020 window.
On the Z06 side, 2024 is the one I’d chase — a year of production behind it, and it’s caught up in the fuel-filler campaign like everything else, which is a free shield. 2027 brings the new 6.7L LS6 to Stingray and Grand Sport, and a brand-new engine has no field record.
